What happened to US television coverage of the European Gymnastics Championships?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself although I’m sure the reason is cost and perceived lack of interest in the broadcasts. The Europeans were broadcast in the US for years but currently are not. I, for one, would love to see Europe’s premier competition broadcast online or on television.

Television coverage of gymnastics events in the US has been the responsibility of several different sports programming brands. ABC, NBC, ESPN, WCSN, and Universal Sports have all provided coverage of international competitions for US viewers.

Currently, USA Gymnastics has an exclusive contract with NBC Sports/Universal Sports to broadcast USA Gymnastics events.  These broadcasts are available on the Universal Sports Channel and streaming online at www.universalsports.com. The USA Gymnastics events include: Visa National Championships, American Cup, Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, Covergirl Classic, US Olympic Trials, the Pacific Rim Championships, World Championships and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The battle for broadcasting rights of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is set for Spring 2011.

The following chart includes US television broadcasts of the European Championships.

Chart: United States Television Coverage of European Gymnastics Championships

Many of the championships listed are competitions that occur in the year of or year before the Olympics. During European domination of gymnastics in the 1960’s, 1970s and 1980s, the European Championships were held in high prestige and the Olympic All Around Champion was often times the reigning European Champion.

This list is not comprehensive. If there are other European Championships that you know have been broadcast in the US, please leave a comment or email Double Front at doublefrontblog@gmail.com.
